Some Observations on the Bacterium Associated with Ratoon Stunting Disease of Sugarcane

چکیده

The consistent association of a bacterium with ratoon stunting disease (RSD) has been confirmed in South Africa by phase contrast and electron microscope examination of sugarcane tissue diffusates from a wide range of varieties. The bacterium is rod shaped, often curved and measures approximately 1,O-4,O pm x 0,2-0,3 ym. Bacteria appear to be systemic within plants affected by RSD, but are most readily observed in diffusates from mature stalk tissue of intolerant varieties. The phase contrast microscope technique described appears useful as a confirmatory aid to RSD diagnosis, but cannot confidently be used as the sole method of diagnosis in very young cane.

Ratoon stunting disease of sugarcane: isolation of the causal bacterium.

A small coryneform bacterium was consistently isolated from sugarcane with ratoon stunting disease and shown to be the causal agent. A similar bacterium was isolated from Bermuda grass. Both strains multiplied in sugarcane and Bermuda grass, but the Bermuda grass strain did not incite the symptoms of ratoon stunting disease in sugarcane. Shoot growth in Bermuda grass was retarded by both strains.

The Effect of Ratoon Stunting Disease on the Yield of Some South African Sugarcane Varieties under Irrigated and Rainfed Conditions

The results of two field trials to determine the effect of ratoon stunting disease on the growth and yield of some widely grown and newly released sugarcane varieties are described. In the plant crop of a trial grown under full irrigation, the greatest reductions in yields of cane and sugar among six varieties, approximately 15%, occurred in N 14 and NC0376. In the first ratoon, the greatest re...

Rapid Spread of Ratoon Stunting Disease during Manual Harvesting of Sugarcane and the Effect of Knife Cleaning on the Rate of Spread

In a field experiment, spreader plants of variety N13 infected with ratoon stunting disease were interplanted with healthy plants of indicator variety NC0376. When cane knives were not disinfected during manual harvesting, 62% ofstalks ofNC0376 down-row from the spreader plants were found to be infected after one harvest, and almost all the stalks were infected after three harvests. This compar...

A Large-scale Diagnostic Service for Ratoon Stunting Disease of Sugarcane

The Experiment Station has provided a diagnostic service for ratoon stunting disease (RSD), based on microscopic observation of the causal bacterium, since 1977. The service is widely used by growers to determine the extent of RSD in commercial cane fields and sources of seedcane, and it is also frequently used by Extension staff for survey purposes. The procedures used for diagnosing RSD are o...

The Use of Tissue Blots to Screen for Varietal Resistance to Ratoon Stunting Disease of Sugarcane

No trials are currently conducted at SASEX to screen genotypes for resistance to ratoon stunting disease (RSD), a disease that is well established in most sugarcane growing regions of the world and considered to cause more yield losses worldwide than any other sugarcane disease. In South Africa, field trials have demonstrated that yield reductions under rainfed conditions can be as high as 40% ...
